Creating a Family-Friendly Home Without Sacrificing Style
HOME. The word means different things to each of us, based on our own experiences. Our homes are a reflection of our us and of each person who lives there: the neat one, the messy one, the louder and the quieter, the risk takers and those who are more peaceful and content. Sometime I'm glad the walls can't speak, and other times, I wish we could record the memories somehow. Designing a home that accommodates a family, while maintaining an elevated and stylish aesthetic is not only possible—it’s incredibly rewarding. With thoughtful choices in materials, finishes, and layouts, you can strike a balance between practicality and beauty. Here are a few tips for creating a family-friendly home that looks as good as it functions, and for bringing some restoration into your home environment.
1. Invest in Furniture That Improves with Wear and Tear
Quality materials like leather, solid wood, and metal tend to age gracefully, developing a patina that tells a story over time. Opt for timeless, well-crafted pieces that withstand heavy use and still look great. Think classic dining tables, sturdy sofas, and resilient coffee tables. Our dining tables are where we will create memories (we've even heard of one family who asks all their guests to sign the underside of the table!) so don't let those scratches and dings bother you!
2. Choose Durable, Performance Fabrics
Performance fabrics have totally revolutionized family-friendly design. Look for upholstery options that resist stains, repel spills, and can be cleaned with water or mild soap. These fabrics are available in a wide range of colors and textures, so you don’t have to compromise on style. Consider brands with designations such as Insideout, Perennials, Revolution or Crypton, or many others that specialize in kid- and pet-friendly textiles. We very rarely do any other kind of upholstery!
3. Opt for Eggshell Paint Finishes
Our walls endure a lot - balls, pets, nerf guns, elbows (and heads), basketball hoops...just to name a few from my own experience. Eggshell finishes are preferred because they’re easier to clean without sacrificing a polished look. Keep a stash of matching paint on hand for touch-ups to keep your walls looking fresh. And be prepared to repaint every few years - trust me - you'll miss these days soon!
4. Plan Storage Thoughtfully
Storage is the backbone of a functional family home. If everything has a home, you at least have a fighting chance of getting organized! Build in plenty of adaptable storage solutions to accommodate growing kids and their evolving needs. Think modular shelving units, under-bed storage, and multipurpose furniture like ottomans with hidden compartments. Built-in storage is a luxury, and we love to design it so it can be useful and functional for many stages of life.
5. Dedicate a Space for Kids—and Let It Be
Give your kids a room or area where they can play, create, and be themselves without worrying about perfection. Whether it’s a playroom, a corner of the living room, or a shared craft area, having a dedicated space helps contain the chaos and gives you peace of mind. Embrace this stage of life and the joy and exhaustion that comes with it...then take few deep breaths, close the door and walk away - HAHA!
6. Use Rugs for Comfort and Style
Rugs can ground a space and add warmth, but in family homes, they also need to stand up to heavy use. Opt for wool, short durable pile or in some cases, indoor-outdoor rugs (especially under a breakfast table!). Choose patterns or textures that disguise dirt and stains and pass on anything silk or viscose - even sisal can be hard to clean.
In Conclusion:
Creating a family-friendly home is all about balance. Invest in durable materials, plan for practicality, and embrace a bit of imperfection and then just go with the flow. Most importantly, let your home reflect the love and life within it. A beautiful space is wonderful, but the memories made there will always be the most cherished feature!
