Small Space, Big Living: How to maximize your space to support your lifestyle

Does your home feel cramped or cluttered? Any home can start feeling this way if you’re not intentional with what you allow into your home and how you set up your spaces. This can be a challenge for all of us, myself included! It can be extra challenging if you are currently living in a small space or if it is shared by many people. Fortunately, there are some great ways that you can make your home more functional while utilizing the same square footage. It just requires a bit more intentionality! With the right space planning strategies, you can turn even the smallest space into a comfortable and stylish oasis that you love to come home to.

I. Assess Your Space

Before you start planning, take stock of your space. Measure your rooms and every nook and cranny and make note of any obstacles or challenges. Consider the natural light, electrical outlets, and any architectural features that may impact your design. Think about the flow of traffic and how you want to move through each room. Make note of any areas that feel cramped or cluttered and prioritize those spaces in your redesign.

Identify your needs: Think about how you want to use each room. Do you need a home office or a guest room? More storage solutions? Consider what your home is currently lacking that you would love to incorporate. Think about your lifestyle and habits - do you work from home, have frequent guests, or enjoy hobbies that require dedicated space? Make a list of your needs and priorities to guide your design decisions.

Additionally, consider the following:

  • How do you want to feel in each room? (e.g. relaxed, energized, inspired)

  • What activities will take place in each room?

  • What kind of storage do you need? (e.g. closet space, shelving, cabinets)

  • Are there any specific design styles or elements you want to incorporate? (e.g. modern, traditional, minimalist)

  • Are there any sustainability or eco-friendliness goals you want to achieve in your design?

By taking the time to thoroughly assess your space and identify your needs, you'll be on track to make the most of your space.

II. Purge and Declutter

Clearing out clutter is essential to creating a sense of space. This can be quite daunting, but it is well worth the effort and feels amazing when you’re done! Go through each room and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. Ask yourself, “what’s more valuable to me, this item or the space?” Be honest with yourself - if you haven't used it in a year or two, it's probably safe to let it go!

Try to adopt somewhat of a minimalist lifestyle while in a small space to make room for the things, hobbies, and people that you really love and want to prioritize in your life. Remember, minimalism isn't about depriving yourself, but about living intentionally and surrounded by only what brings you joy.

After you’ve decluttered, sort the remaining items into categories that make sense in your home. Everything should have a home so that you can maintain your new system! Use storage containers, bins, and baskets to keep items organized and out of sight. Label each category so you can easily find what you need. Consider implementing habits like:

  • One in, one out: for every new item you bring in, get rid of an old one

  • Regular tidying: set aside time each week to maintain your space

  • Seasonal decluttering: go through your belongings seasonally to get rid of items no longer needed

By maintaining a clutter-free space, you'll feel more relaxed, focused, and inspired in your home.

III. Optimize Your Space

Choose furniture that serves multiple purposes and makes the most of your space. Consider couches or ottomans with storage underneath, coffee tables with built-in storage, or desks with shelving. Make sure your furniture is the appropriate scale for your space, so it doesn’t make it feel smaller. Avoid bulky or oversized pieces that can overwhelm the room. Instead, opt for sleek and streamlined designs that create a sense of breathability.

Utilize vertical space with wall-mounted storage options and shelving to get as much off the floor as possible. This will help create a sense of openness and flow. Consider using stackable shelves, hanging rods, or hooks to maximize your walls. Install shelves or storage units that go up to the ceiling to make the most of your space. Use wall-mounted desks, tables, or countertops to keep the floor clear and create a sense of spaciousness.

Additionally, consider the following:

  • Use nesting tables or stools to save floor space

  • Choose multi-functional decor items, like a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table

  • Incorporate hidden storage, like under-bed storage or secret compartments

  • Utilize the space above your doors with over-the-door storage racks or shelves

IV. Create Zones

Divide your space into functional zones to create a sense of separation. Even in the same room, you can use rugs, furniture, and lighting that aligns with the purpose of each zone to define different areas. For example, a reading nook can be created with a comfortable chair, floor lamp, and side table. A home office can be defined with a desk, chair, and shelving unit. This will help create a sense of purpose and functionality in each area, making your space feel more organized and intentional.

Consider the following zones:

  • Relaxation zone: a cozy reading nook or a calming seating area

  • Productivity zone: a dedicated home office or workspace

  • Social zone: a dining area or living room for entertaining

  • Storage zone: a designated area for storage and organization

Additionally, consider using:

  • Room dividers or screens to separate zones

  • Different colors or textures to define each zone

  • Plants or artwork to enhance the ambiance of each zone

  • Rugs, furniture, and lighting to further define the zones

V. Trick the Eye

Even in a small space, there are some ways that you can make it feel larger than it is. Use floor-to-ceiling curtains to create the illusion of height and hang them wider to make your window look larger. Incorporate mirrors to create the illusion of more space and hang them on opposite sides of windows to reflect natural light. Try to keep a light color scheme so that the light bounces around the room more, making the space feel brighter and larger. Avoid heavy patterns and dark colors that can make a space feel smaller.

Additionally, consider the following tricks to create the illusion of more space:

  • Use transparent or translucent furniture, such as glass or acrylic tables, to create a sense of openness

  • Minimize clutter and keep surfaces clear to create a sense of visual flow

  • Use vertical elements, like floor lamps or tall vases, to draw the eye upwards and create a sense of height

  • Avoid heavy drapery or thick rugs that can make a space feel cozy but smaller

By incorporating these tricks, you can create a sense of spaciousness and airiness in even the smallest rooms. Remember, it's all about creating an illusion of more space, and with a little creativity, you can make your space feel larger than it is.

VI. Lastly, Make it Pretty

Now that you have all these great systems in place, it’s time for the fun part! Just because a space is small doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful. In fact, small spaces can be the perfect canvas for showcasing your personal style and creativity.

Try to layer textures that add depth to a space without making it feel cramped. Mix materials like velvet, linen, and wood to create a visually interesting atmosphere. Add throw pillows and blankets in complementary colors to inject warmth and coziness. A leather chair or a vintage rug can add a touch of sophistication, while subtle wallpaper or grasscloth can bring in a natural element.

Don't forget about lighting! Cozy lamps or string lights can create a warm and inviting ambiance, while beautiful artwork or prints can add personality to your space. Use baskets or decorative containers to store items like books, magazines, or knick-knacks, keeping them out of sight while still adding texture and interest.

When you combine elements like these in a room, you elevate it and create a warm, inviting space that you can be proud to show off! Remember, it's all about balance and harmony – don't be afraid to experiment and find the perfect blend of style and function for your small space.

Hopefully you found these tips helpful. By following these space planning strategies, you can turn even the smallest space into a comfortable and functional home. Remember to stay flexible and have fun with the process!
